Cumbia Cosmonauts

Tropical space cowboys The Cumbia Cosmonauts are fast invading Australia with their monumental fiesta sound from outer Latin America.

Their music is futurist-folk, refined low-fi culture based on the raw Afro-Caribbean cumbia roots music of Colombia mixed with Central European instrumentation and Jamaican dub wizardry; the Mexican electronic sonideros; Peruvian psychedelic chicha funk and the digital cumbia experimentation happening in Argentina.

The Cumbia Cosmonauts are Australia’s first cumbia sound system, led by producers Moses “saca la mois DJ!!” Iten and Thomas “Soup” Campbell (Miso, Editor), and frequently joined by explosive accordion player Carlos Parraga (Barons Of Tang).

Before having made an official release, The Cumbia Cosmonauts have already begun to work with their musical heroes, producing remixes for some of Latin America’s most renowned electronic-folk artists such as Nortec Collective (Mexico), Tremor (Argentina) and Radiokijada (Peru/France).

Taking The Cumbia Cosmonauts’ sound to Europe, saca la mois DJ!! toured in July/August 2009, DJing ten cumbia shows in Barcelona, Berlin, London, Rotterdam and the massive Caribbean party Antilliaanse Feesten Hoogstraten (Belgium), as well as Lowlands Festival (Netherlands). During the tour saca la mois DJ!! played with nueva-cumbia outfits The Peronists (Argentina), Sonido del Principe (Netherlands), Bomba Estereo (Colombia), Chicha Libre (USA)…and even had some beers with El Hijo de la Cumbia (Argentina).
