james amato

As you should all know by now Scatterfest isn’t too far away so expect a lot of posts highlighting some of the artists that appear on the line up. After Lewis great post on Shit Robot, I’ve put together a bit of background information on James Amato.

James Amato is one of the most widely recognised names in the electronic music scene, and also one of the busiest. Not just a DJ, James divides his time promoting club nights and since 2007, has been running his fidget/electro/tech-house record label ‘Potty Mouth Records’ which is one of the hottest labels in the music scene today.

1990 saw James launch his music career in Milwaukee and as he worked his way through the local and Midwest rave scene, his profile grew. In 2004 James became Milwaukee’s Mantra Lounges co-owner/director of music and bookings – which opened the doors for him to launch the successful club night ‘Kamasutra’. The night continued to grow during the 3-years stint, giving the club national attention with publications in URB magazine and a front-page cover story in Nightclub/Bar Magazine.’

Basing himself in Chicago in 2006, James became the new director of Music and Bookings for ‘Smart Bar’, a venue with 25 years of showcasing electronic talent under its belt. Juggling the roles of both promoter and booker, he was responsible of bringing Chicago some of the hottest acts in the electronic music scene to date. These included Switch, Alan Braxe, Digitalism, Crookers, Erol Alkan and Claude Vonstroke .

In 2007, James received critical fanfare in Chicago when he was named part of New City Magazines “45 Most Influential People That Rock Chicago.” In addition to this he was named one of the next “10 Exciting Up-And-Comers” in the electronic music world in 2008.

James’ rising profile in the underground electronic scene led to the creation of two successful digital/vinyl labels including the well-known Potty Mouth Music which has now established itself as a label which has supported the electro, house, techno and crunk genres. The label has released over 30 EP’s and has showcased big-name talent including: Santiago & Bushido, Crookers, HiJack and the Mightyfools.

In October 2009 James relocated to Los Angeles where he continues to balance his career as a promoter, label-owner, DJ and producer.

As an extra here is a link to a current phone interview James did on potty mouth music

I love this time of year, the weather starts to get warmer, the beers are flowing and it seems like every weekend we have another International guest in town to provide the soundtrack to our summer. This Friday I’ve got the chance to support the man behind the world famous Mad Decent label, Paul Devro and I’m pumped for it! Paul is coming out to Australia for the Diesel Xmas party at the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney and word has it he is bringing Maluca out with him. Its all going down in Melbourne on Friday downstairs at the Mercat Cross Hotel with support from myself Mat Cant, Steezy, Tranter and Team Opulent and entry is only $10.

Heres a old Paul Devro track i pulled out of the vault for your collection, i have been known to reach out and play this quite a bit, always a crowd favourite

Saturday is the next Scatterblog presents party this time featuring the one and only mad man Rico Tubbs! Rico smashed the good vibrations festival last year and now he’s back to do it all again. I wont write anymore about this night because there has already been a post all about the event, but instead i will give you his new remix he has just done for Tittsworth, classic Rico Tubbs right here so if you love your squelchy wobble basslines this ones for you.

Kinda blog diary……eewww

Lately I have been real busy in the studio with Scatters finishing off some new Slap & Dash production, including a remix for Edu K’s ep coming out through Scattermusic, also working on our new Slap & Dash 4 deck,  plus adding some more Mu remix love on Lewis Cancut’s ep which will surprise a whole bunch of cats. The boy is a little genius. This is the first and last time I’m going to post something up like its a blog diary, but i kinda wanna share. In my hiatus I did a whole bunch of production mixes and edits for fashion shows around the country. I get a fair bit of this work and its always fun as you get to explore the different shades of electronic music. It’s kinda shaping the way i see music now, dance music especially. I’m looking for a bit more than just a hook. I’m finding myself deep in the arrangements of music. Anyway blah fucking blah. To sum it up I’m using arrangements and samples from 60-70’s world records and adding them to modern electronica to make some pretty fun stuff. More for the listen than the play out, but I figure I would share what I have been doing to excuse my no-posting for the last couple of months. Also for the club heads is my 15min mix I did for a dj comp in Melbourne a little bit back. This is a live practice from the day before so excuse some mistakes. In the end I didn’t win. Ripped off i tellz ya.. Nah, well done to Spacey who did.

Mu-Gen Dhini RAFW ‘09 (DOWNLOAD)

No track list available for this one as its real short (like 5mins) and choc full of samples. Prob my favourite fashion mix I have made of late. The brief i worked with had key words like tribal and marching drums. The start of the show had a live marching band drummer playing along until the main drop where i sampled buraka. Was mad fun to work with  a live musician on a piece of work I’m really proud of.

Mu-Gen – Trimapee 09 (MFW) DOWNLOAD

This mix was so much fun to put together. I always do Trimapee’s show music and have a really good relationship with the guys who run it. They pretty much give a brief and let me run with what I want. This mix had a crazy brief, industrial, Arabic, historical and modern. WTF right? It took a bit of planning but i think I nailed it.

Mu-Gen – Absolute 15 djcomp (practice mix) DOWNLOAD
So I won this comp a couple of years ago and was pretty keen to do it again this year.
