Where Americas Vol. 1 focused on the IDM-Cumbia experimentation coming out of Argentina, my second Americas Volume compilation is dominated by a wealth of new Mexican music, especially from the prolific Tijuana scene.  Clorofila (who actually lives in Pasadena, California) from the influential Nortec Collective is represented with two remixes, and also from Tijuana are experimental folk-pop producers Los Macuanos and Maria y Jose: two projects who are spearheading a new direction in indy meets electronica meets folk meets club imbued with a distinctive Mexican sense of humour and irony.  Other parts of Mexico are represented by a promising debut release from Melbourne-based Mexico City-inspired folk-dub project Nahuatl Sound System, two songs from Monterrey’s Sr. Amable and finally Los Amparito and Pepepe, both from Guadalajara.

Peru is represented this time by several remixes of songs by the Paris-based Radiokijada, produced by Rodolfo Munoz and Christoph H. Mueller of Gotan Project.  I’m especially hyped to include another unreleased track by Cero 39 (for me personally the most exciting contemporary Colombian producer).

Whilst “Americas” may appear to be a series of compilations selected for geographical criteria, far beyond there having to be an Americas connection, the choice of songs is purely aesthetic.  In that way I present a specific set of my personal tastes in digging/listening, but potentially also capture a particular moment in the history of the most exciting music crossing the borders of folk, electronica and pop…

It’s pretty close to release time (27th July) for my Fizzdom joint so i thought i would start the promo train and share a mix i did a bit over a month ago now. At the time of making this i was really getting down to futuristic dark club music, stuff that sounds like it was made for ravers in 2020. Drums, deep bass and dark synth lines from start to finish are not my usual style, but this mix and the fizzdom release signifies a turning point in my sound i would say. I wasn’t really concerned with putting together a set of well known bangers, it was more of a self indulgent process and something i really needed to get out of my system at the time. Recorded live on two 1200′s, Rane ttm56 and Serato. I cant believe it’s taken me this long to upload it, but its here now so ill just shut up and give u the tracklist.

Kingdom set for Get Wavey

July 13th, 2010

When Kingdom played with us early in the year, his set managed to resonate with each Scatterblogger for a long while after. Every now and again a sound or an artist comes along and slaps everyone in the face and gets us all rethinking what we’re into.

Kingdoms sound was in some way deep and atmospheric, musical and cluby. It filled the room with huge bass, endless reverbs and rumbling drums… I know Kingdom has been getting a lot of hype as of late, but i never truly believed it until i heard it live. When you hear a set of his through headphones or a home system it’s really hard to translate the impact that it has on giant subs and an array of speakers, but it’s definitely worth a shot. Play it big and loud and bug out.

This set was recorded live when Kingdom did a show with those rad kids, Get Wavey.

Kingdom – Live CD-R Set For Get Wavey (June 2010)

This podcast is way overdue here at Scatterblog as we’ve all been incorporating more and more Guarachon into our sets during recent months, not just that but as a sweeping, general statement we’re pretty damn keen on the Mexican music scene in general (Don’t sleep on the Dirty Beats Ep from March!). While I can’t speak for the rest of the world, here in melbourne dancefloors have been begging for a change from the “four on the floor” norm, which may account for why tribal music is being so well received here. It would also explain why Moombahton is currently doing so well with its slow and heavy syncopated grind. Anyway I’ve tried to incorporate most of Mexico’s club heavyweights on this mix and while there is also some amazing tribal coming out of europe now from the likes of Bok Bok, Canblaster and others, this one is more of a purist mix for the nerds.

I’ve been hanging out for this one for a while now and if you’ve seen the Cumbia Cosmonauts super heavy live show you’d understand why. With so much of the club music right now being crowded, intensely compressed and generally over the top, it’s so good to hear anything this spacious that’s still full of energy. The attention to detail here is also of the hook with every track being completely remixed to the point where you could safely call it an album of versions. But this really is only just the beginning for this unruly cohort of cumbia hustlers as they’re currently putting the finishing touches to a truly dope EP and European tour for later this year. Don’t sleep.

Cumbia Cosmonauts – Scattermusic Podcast #5

Tracklist:

Cumbianauts Incoming
Since My Love Died

Jungle Chichatón
Congo Jungle
Cumbia Disco
La Pollera Rebaja
My Grandfather ‘s Dead
My Mule Don’t Like People Laughing

Also recently I took time to head over to the Cosmonauts studio and quiz them as to how their super heavy, deep bass and blazing horn arrangements had come into existence. The result is the short, transcribed interview below.

L > Lewis CanCut

M > Saca La Mois Dj

S > Soup

Taken 17/05/2010

L: Moses, so as far as I can gather your background comes from traveling around collecting regional styles of music digitally yeah?

M: Mostly physically, but more recently also digitally.  Yeah, that’s what I did even before getting into DJing actually.  Having a selection of music that other people didn’t but found to be exotic got me invited into being on radio and from there it then got transferred into the live context of being a DJ. Obviously once you’re in it then you start looking for music specifically for your DJ set and I’ve always been mostly dance floor focused. Before all that when I was kid growing up in Switzerland I played the accordion, though that disappeared when I moved to Australia. But that sound has stuck in my head which is why years down the track, hearing a style of music that is dominated by accordion with a very simple beat being Cumbia, it just grabbed me.

L: You’re known in Melbourne as one of the granddaddies of the world music club scene, at what point did you start specifically start collecting global sounds?

M: I’m too young to be any type of grandaddy…but I’ve always collected global sounds, even as a kid in Switzerland. Growing up in Europe you don’t understand 90% of the words, which tends to destroy the barriers of what is the known world and what is the unknown world. If it’s a sound I like then I grab it. When I moved to Melbourne though it became like a political mission in the pioneering days when anywhere you played people would be “Uhh..What is that”?

L: Now worldly sounds are trendy though ever since Baile Funk blew up right?

M: Basically yeah, that was a really big thing.

L: And Soup your musical background from what I can piece together is in experimental beats?

S: Well yeah but when was a kid I studied guitar and up until my late teens wanted to be a session jazz guitar player and get like $300 every time I recorded. That’s obviously a bygone era though which made me think, “what do I really wanted to do anyway”, like develop an identity and experiment with new ideas and new mediums. Then I realized that I much preferred to make music using a computer rather than a guitar anyway because it gave me a sound canvas that was a million times bigger.

L: Soup you’ve got several projects on the go besides the Cosmonauts right?

S:Yeah Miso and Editor, which are both going strong. Because of those projects though I’m also doing well with a bunch of freelance production work. I’m definitely more rooted in the live music scene of Melbourne because when I got here and wanted to play guitar I met a lot of bands, drummers etc.

L: Has that helped you out being a musician that knows production because in Melbourne those scenes don’t cross over much?

S: Yeah, the protocol is so different. It’s such a competitive edge and a benefit to your music if you’re a producer that knows how to talk about instruments and ways of writing for them.

M: With the Cumbia Cosmonauts we work with so many acoustic musicians and Soup already had a big network, which is what we now use for the sound system.

L: So how was it that you guys actually formed as the Cosmonauts?

M: We’d known each other for a while and Soup was always very encouraging for me to get into production and I was trying to get Soup to do more DJing haha. “You can make money DJing!” I got obsessed with cumbia and asked Soup to help me musically and technically to produce it and he said “yeah sounds awesome, lets do a track”. Soup had a sound system party in the park and I DJed cumbia there. Carlos (Cosmonauts’ accordion player) was this guy I’d never met there who was dancing like mad saying “this is the music my parents play”. So the first productive meeting we had was the three of us in the studio actually.

S: I didn’t even know what cumbia was when we wrote the first track haha.

L: All you need to know is the chh…..ch.ch.chh…..ch.ch.chh…..ch.ch.chh..

S: That’s how I now describe it to people.

L: So to finish up, you guys not only have this mixtape out now but also an EP of original material that’s not far off?

S: Yeah, it’s funny because we’re calling it a mixtape due to the sampling that’s going on and we need to obviously give it a moniker that’s a homage to the original creators of the music which we’re, for want of a better word; appropriating. In saying that though, the amount of work that’s gone into (remixing) each track on the mixtape is similar to writing a new track. For me that was really important to get inside the sound, I feel informed now so when it comes writing tracks where we don’t sample traditional cumbia, I’ve got something to draw upon.

M: That’s the first offering of getting to know the music; you start with samples and build something around it. Then after a while you realize you don’t need to have the foundation from a sample, you can build the foundation yourself.

So next week for those who don’t know Lewis CanCut and Scattermusic will be unleashing the ultra tropical heat-wave, soon to be known as Neon Saxophone. Three originals with remix duties handed to Chico Ye, Sonido Del Principe and The Cumbia Cosmonauts come together to start an all in brawl of lazers, cheap drum machine programing, african crumping, accordion thrashing, euro-daggering, air horn sounding, halftime bubbling, cumbia grinding madness. Basically this EP is one for all those world club heads out there that need a little quijada in thier riddim before getting down. The pre-party of the package is this here mix comprised of 14 digital dubplates from recent Neon Saxophone DJ sets, most of which would never otherwise see the light of day online. Turn up your central heating, mix a drink, strip off a few layers and start liming.

Kinky

May 17th, 2010

Got this cool little mix in the mail from Kinky Duke from Tel Aviv. Check it for a jump from Cumbia to Moombahton to House and Dutch and etc.
There were especially a couple of tracks that caught me from the mix…

Angger Dimas from Indonesia has done a real hype dutch afrojack-esque mix of Missy Elliot’s “Pass That Dutch”. It just fits in that fun playable area of DJ tunes – nothing amazingly new (unless we’re talking about the drums and cut-ups in the breakdown/original part) but a good take on the original.

Missy Elliot – Pass That Dutch (Angger Dimas Bootleg)

Then there’s this DJ Punish mix of “El Capillo” which is a great example of the little bmore/baile revival that’s been happening of late which has definitely been getting me and mr lewis excited.

Fulanito – El Cepollo (Dj Punish Bootleg)

Don’t forget Kinky’s Mix:

Tracklist:
Cumbias Into
Sabo & Cassady – Kuff Kumbia
Solo – Congaloid (Lewis’s re rub)
Mu-Gen – Turn that shit up (Moombahton Edit)
A-Mac – Long Train to Moombahton

Moombahton Neoterico – Khattabi Boombah
Mu-Gen – Konstruction Karma Qu (Moombahton Edit)

Feeling Lucid.

May 14th, 2010

Type the word lucid into your browser and it brings up more cosmic dream related material than you can shake a crystal at, search our site though and you get one of Melbourne’s best and brightest producers. Tuesday next week we release of his debut ep consisting of three killer club tunes and believe me, this is going to be something big. Not quite sure how to even describe the sound but if I had too well I’d call it a beast of warped and bubbling Dutch house over landscapes reminiscent of Detroit’s golden era. To celebrate the release we’ve asked him to put together a mixtape of current club sounds he’s following so hit the download link and let it keep you hyped for a couple of days till the real business drops.

………..

To say that I have a slight obsession with Moombahton would be like totally right. Initially the story on how moombahton founder Dave Nada started the whole thing at some underage Latino skipping party got me curious, but after digging deeper into the tunes and bumping them on dance floors I have fallen in love.  Before my life as a club music dj I was pretty hard out into hip hop and turntableism which makes moombahton feel just right for me. Lewis once said to me after hearing some of this shit “its as if we were playing hip hop all this time, just sped the fuck up”,  and he is so right! It just feels like such a relief to be jamming tunes at slightly over 100bpm to a club crowd again. You can do so much more as a dj in terms of manipulating the music at this speed.

Onto the mix: Well Im not gonna spew words for ages so here it goes. The start is full of some of the tunes you might already know, they have been floating around for a couple of months now and are mainly edits of “big tunes”. By the time you hear Munchi’s contribution its some next level boomahton bizz. This dood is the future of moombahton, he is making original tracks in the moombahton style that are just blowing the edits/remixes out of the water. Cant wait to see a whole bunch more in the realm of original moombahton production. When I started the mix I also put the word out to the other Scattermusic homies to make some edits of their own to include, sooooo dope when they turn out to be some of the hottest tracks in the mix. Everyone on the team has at least one on here. Cant believe we pulled this off from start to finish in 2 days… BOOOOOOOOm

Sweet, so we starting off this podcast series as Slap & Dash and it feels all-too-right. The series will grow in coming months with a Cumbia Cosmonauts Cumbia themed mix, a Scattermish Emotronic mix and then a megamix of all plenty of our label tracks new, old and never-to-be-released by Mu-Gen.

Get the gist? All mixes will be more than just everyday mixes – most will have a theme, most will be crafted especially for the series, most will be by Scattermusic artists.

On to Podcast #1 – The Slap & Dash mix – the one that we did for the amazing Discobelle Mixin It Up Series. It’s pretty epic and there’s hours upon hours of blood sweat and tears that went into creating this mix. All Slap & Dash mixes are made for live use s0 they’re all made for the dancefloor and we feel like they work as a big show rather than just a DJ set… Every second is covered in this set, everything is meticulously crafted, and there is no minute left in the mix that hasn’t been carefully thought out.

As much as we love freestyling, we really like to look at our shows from an almost band-like perspective and think about putting on the best show and experience we can. So we’ll literally sit in the studio for hours upon end working at cue points, song structures and live remixes that we can do to mold tracks together. Every DJs favourite friend Serato and Traktor Scratch make this mix possible – ie. mixing a new song within one beat of the last finishing, setting multiple cue points and jumping to whichever part of the song we like, writing in notes about how to play each song. But on top of that there’s that old thing; practice, practice, practice.

With all the tracks we’ve included, the mix is obviously very mash – but we try to make it not feel so. Hopefully it turns out as almost more of a giant song rather than a mix.

Back From Summer Vacation

Jungle

Just before the end of the year I put this mix together as a farewell to 2009, before the thing got posted though I ended up disapearing into the tropical depths of Australia’s north-east for a much needed break (This photo is actually taken about 5 minutes away from where I was staying by dj Ms Butt). Anyway though about the mix, I guess it was a summery of the sound I have DJing over the last few months, perhaps with a slight nod of where things might go in 2010. Everyone seems to once again be getting a little too comfortable, maybe meaning the whole scene is going to soon flip again.

devro

I love this time of year, the weather starts to get warmer, the beers are flowing and it seems like every weekend we have another International guest in town to provide the soundtrack to our summer. This Friday I’ve got the chance to support the man behind the world famous Mad Decent label, Paul Devro and I’m pumped for it! Paul is coming out to Australia for the Diesel Xmas party at the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney and word has it he is bringing Maluca out with him. Its all going down in Melbourne on Friday downstairs at the Mercat Cross Hotel with support from myself Mat Cant, Steezy, Tranter and Team Opulent and entry is only $10.

Heres a old Paul Devro track i pulled out of the vault for your collection, i have been known to reach out and play this quite a bit, always a crowd favourite

Saturday is the next Scatterblog presents party this time featuring the one and only mad man Rico Tubbs! Rico smashed the good vibrations festival last year and now he’s back to do it all again. I wont write anymore about this night because there has already been a post all about the event, but instead i will give you his new remix he has just done for Tittsworth, classic Rico Tubbs right here so if you love your squelchy wobble basslines this ones for you.

BONUS

I just finished uploading this so i thought i might as well post it now… A couple of weeks ago I went up to Sydney for the weekend to play some gigs and my set at world bar was so well received i thought i would re-record my set i did that night and post it up as a mix for everyone to enjoy. There are a couple of cheeky edits in there as well as some new tracks that will be coming out on scattermusic very soon! I will put the tracklist in the comments section too, hope you enjoy it

Mat Cant – Wham! @ World Bar Sydney Mix (14/11/09)

Also watch out for the next Scattercam video from our Hornbo release party with Rob Threezy to be released in the next day or two

Rico Tubbs started with a boom, back in 2002 on Menu music when the debut 12″ p-funk inspired fartbass anthem “Flashlighter” was released. That opened the flood gates for steady flow of bassheavy party beats. Blending various genres of dance music and combining them under one big party banner of bass, some essential “Ricos Rave Juice” ingredients include: Fidget House, Speed Garage/Bassline, Baltimore, Indiedance/Electro, Olskool Rave & Dubstep.

His Debut LP “Knuckle Sandwich” was a big mover, and got plenty of blogs, DJs and reviewers hooked. His party-style bass music has seen him release original tunes on leading electronic music labels Cheap Thrills, Menu Music and A New Hope Records. He has now also started up his own label with Atomic Hooligan, Bass = Win.

With his DJing being nothing shy of awesome, Rico has received much accolade and applause at every turn. He was voted the best electronic music DJ in Finland for 2006 & 2007 and has played to massive crowds all over the globe.

Scatterblog will bring the rain for this show with extra support from Slap & Dash (with a huge new set), Scattermish, Mu-Gen, Lewis CanCut and Mat Cant. Free Entry! 10pm-3am.
