Simon L. King AKA the Cheap Assassin began photography professionally in 2006 when during a trip to Kolkata, India he had the good fortune to be urinated on by a child. Experiences like this can make even the most stalwart sour but the “Cheap Assassin” left the encounter with the urge to capture moments just like this, moments that express total freedom and release.
Since 2006 “the Cheap Assassin’s” style has evolved from documenting real-life situations and landscapes in the far corners of the globe, towards centering and capturing moments in his photographs that begs the observer to make their own assumptions. Its balls out, grimeier than your granny’s undies and very in your face.
During the summer of 07/08 he was part of a media team that documented the slaughtering of whales in Antarctica (*cough* Hippy *cough*). Totally music related! Since then he has held several successful exhibitions of his works along the west coast of Victoria.
Currently the Assassin is the artistic director of X magazine, a free street press publication covering contemporary indie and youth culture with a high visual focus.
He shoots with a mix of digital, 35mm and medium-format film, and makes his photographs using a Nikon D700, KMZ Zorki 1 and a Lubitel 166B.
