Music Making On The iPad
So i’ve been trying to convince myself lately that i “need” an iPad. I almost did with iPad 1, but now the 2 is out, with it’s inbuilt camera, faster processing and graphics and great support for apps like GarageBand (which looks pretty damn rad!). I’m now much more able to justify a new toy to read magazines and play games on.
I’ve been looking into a few ways to link it up with other devices. Apps like GarageBand, as shown in this video, are great for iPad on board application. The video above, found over at tuaw goes into ways of linking up all kinds of synths and midi instruments using things like the apple camera connection kit and etc… Check Create Digital Music’s extensive article for a bunch more videos on the subject.
On top of that, there’s always TouchOSC. An amazing app that can control midi over wifi! Basically you just get a program like Puredata to receive the messages from TouchOSC on your iPad/iPhone/iPod and convert them into midi. Revolutionary!!
There’s plenty of templates out there, for example some traktor ones. And there’s plenty of options, ie: Serato control, Logic control, Ableton control.
