Tijuana Makes Me Happy

Maria y Jose from Tijuana has just dropped another killer release: the Kibosé/Cocobass EP.  Of the many ideas threatening to explode out of their earlier lo-fi pop experimentations, arrives this full-on guarachero cumbia assault – and Tijuana just can’t stop making me happy! Whilst Scattermusic’s Tijuana signing DirtyBeats went straight for the club-dancefloor jugular, the rest of this new generation had so far been hanging out in the realms of the lo-fi, broken beats and experimental pop.  But oozing with confidence, this fresh crop of producers hold back at nothing and are now well and truly beginning to flex their muscles.  Keep an eye out on the multi-talented Los Macuanos, and the promising Nortec-influenced Santos who came out of nowhere with his full-length demo-release Casita Bar.

In case you didn’t know, this notorious city of sin on the Mexico-US border has been on the global electronic music map since the release of Nortec Collective’s Tijuana Sessions Vol.1 in 2002.  From that first compilation emerged a host of producers nominated currently touring the globe, such as Bostich+Fussible who played at WOMADelaide 2010.  Also from Nortec is Clorofila, whose long-awaited debut solo album Corridos Urbanos has just been released by Nacional Records to great acclaim.

Tijuana represented on Americas Vol.1 with new mid-tempo and downbeat offerings from Clorofila’s side-project Tremolo Audio, and Moises Horta’s evocative projects Kixly and Los Macuanos.  Americas Vol.2 is featuring Tijuana’s Clorofila, Los Macuanos, Maria y Jose and DirtyBeats.  No doubt this fertile desert-city will continue to represent on Americas Vol.3

Tijuana makes us all happy.
