when music lost it’s cool and got fun

Music used to be all about cool sounds and interesting bits. 90s music was all about that, hell hip-hop was built around it. And all that stuff was dope (it made me the man i am today *shead a tear*). But since the DJ took over the music scene, and everyone wants that next floor filla, music has become all about fun. We’re talking massive builds, big drops, bouncey basslines and raw club crack that makes you dance all funny. Just something i was thinking about the other day when going thru some old tunes for a project.
oh and one more, er a post.pre.script this time i spose, is i’m sorry if a few of these tunes have been splattered around other blogs already, but since i have the internet problem, i haven’t been able to check many other blogs as of late, so these are just a few of my favorite tunes as of late…
Ok, i’ve decided i’m into posting production mix tapes now. I’m still a bit off general mix-tapes, unless i’m in a good mood, but ones that focus on a DJs production stuff are cool cause you hear exclusives and get a nice window into their style.
You mighta noticed i’m totally jumping on anything Jak-Z i can get right now – dudes really impressing me, and he’s doing some nice collabs too (head to his myspace for some new tuneage). He’s got a release being pressed on Moda, which will have to be a real cool label venture as their nights sound sick, and they’ve got a whole bunch of mad cunts working for them. Expect the label to pop up soon with a Jak-Z(ee) release. Also check back on the blog soon as we should be getting the bootleg of “Sounds of A Loop Da Loop Era” which is one of my favorite tracks, i’ll try pester him for a better qual version of the Nightcrawlers remix too.
Jak-Z – Production Mini-Mix
Tracklist:
1. Crystal Waters – Gypsy Woman (Jak-Z Production Mix)
2. Jak-Z – Cutie Pie
3. Jak-Z and Scott Cooper – Move Ya Body
4. Jak-Z – Feeling Rather Good
5. Snap! – Got The Power! (Jak-Z Production Mix)
6. Jak-Z – Hurt Me
There’s also been a release of the South Rakkas Crew’s “Mad Again”. With some remixes from some top players. Go grab the rest of them at high qual from Turntable Lab. The remix from Boy 8-Bit is like up there with my favorite tracks at the moment (has everyone heard teh Switch remix of Mystery Jet’s “Hideaway”?? that thing is like totally off the hook, makes me wanna dance like a flying plane every time). The mad again remix is filled with some fucken nice sounds. Play it on a big system or some nice headphones so you get an idea for the bass drop, but those chimes and vocal cut-ups are well dope (i spose this fits into a cool sounds and straight fun kinda tune, but i think with a tip of the hat towards fun).
Also, I’m running outta time, so just search Hype Machine for about a million links to the switch remix.

Some more bits of dope shit comes in the form of the latest Mowgli bootleg, the third in his series. It’s a flip on Michael Jackson, and we all know his tracks still manage to get clubs going. This is a really cool flip tho, it’s got some nice grind to it, so check it…

The Yank seems to be a pretty elusive man, and i never really see his beats around, and dunno why more people aren’t into him, search beatport yo’s! I know Mowgli is into him, they both actually seem to have some similarities. Check this latest beat (there’s a remix from DJ Bam Bam out too). I tend to mix it in from the 3 min break, as it can lose a little energy at the first drop. Go grab the original here, and the remix here.

His Majesty Andre’s track “Girrrl” has turned out to be a gem in my collection, and it seems like i’m playing it everytime i’m out these days. It’s a kinda stripped back cruisy bassy house thing, and it works real nice on a good system. First time i played it, it seemed like it got way more people rolling than i thought it would, and got me hooked too. I’ve been meaning to post it for a while, big up andre.

Another track i’ve been sitting on for way too long, which is a bit of a staple in my sets, and i know is also in Mu-Gen’s, comes from sydney siders, The Hump Day Project. Got this with a couple of others in the mail from Steve Lind, who does lotsa the Chinese Laundry stuff up in Sydney and is one half of The Hump Day Project along with One Man Army. This remix of Se:sa is the stand out track for me, and has been sending a lotta people pretty crazy. If you want more of their tracks, check out their official site. Also check their facebook group if you’re into that.

This newish Hijack remix is definately a big killer. It’s got some classic fidget roll, and Hijack jack stylings, which are definately big on my list of pet treats, but my favorite bit is the 808 throughback breakdown at 3:30 (about halfway thru the preview posted). It’s another track that i play in just about all my sets these days… Check the release, the latest on Jack Union, and go buy the full copy. Look out for Nic Sarno and his label ESP Records too.

I’ve been meaning to post some gems from both Twocker and Stupid Fresh for ages now, but have never gotten round to posting anything from either of them (although i have posted on Will Bailey, 1 half of twocker before). They’ve been getting some hype on a few places i think, but def need some scatterblog love too. Both have a bunch of nice tunes for me to choose from, but i thought i’d go with a couple of staple favorites, and both of them are huuge sounding tunes (all twockers tunes are pretty huge tho, that’s kinda their sound), so beware. The Twocker remix is of that old school cat, CJ Bolland, and is filled with big drops, long builds, and a classic vocal breakdown in the middle. The Stupid Fresh remix is of a Moston & Malente track, and is another massive thing, with a long arese build up, and big drop. It helps when coming outta some other big track like some big Crookers of MSTRKRFT style thing. Both these tracks kinda fit in a similar niche actually. Check out the rest of the Moston & Malente remix, and a newly released twocker original.
I feel like i’m gonna get tired of these kinda sounds tho, i must say (i’m starting to get tired of lots of the herve, sinden, crookers stuff lately too, any1 else? – although much is still fucken awesome). Anyway for now i still think this sound is word.

My thoughts exactly! – it’s all about the fun, bass line house, mash ups and Baltimore influence are all creeping mainstream.
I have big disagreements with my dj peers who write some of this stuff off as cheesy. i think they are missing the point and playing records for themselves rather than the dance floor!
Some powerful tracks there! they will be pumped through serato within the hour!
u should to post more n more n more! lol
best from mexico!
